Three years after Houston’s death, her only daughter, Bobbi Kristina, died from a combination of drowning and drug intoxication at the age of 22; before she died, she spent months in a coma. Immediately following the wedding the couple became tabloid fodder with their very public fights and drama, and Houston's use of substance escalated. I am a similar age and many of her songs became part of the soundtrack of my life and to me, she had it all - a staggering beauty, elegance, success, financial security and a peerless voice. Crawford and Houston were teenagers when they met at a community centre in East Orange, New Jersey, the singer the younger by three years. Deeply personal and heartfelt, A Song for You is the vital, honest, and previously untold story that provides an understanding of the complex life of Whitney Houston.

As this once classy woman who had so much talent, that I watched and enjoyed as a child in the 80's and grew up listening to, turned into a shadow of her former self.

The houstons were beyond toxic even pre fame and they trivialised the drug problems in their family. In her long awaited memoir she finally shares her side of all the stories we’ve heard from so many others. In the end, they proved to be too much for even a great friend and she left Whitney's company feeling frustrated and defeated. Care-taking came naturally; she’d grown up in a family where her father had violently abused her mother and where, from a young age, Crawford had taken on the role of protector. Reading her book, one gets the chilling sense not only of how alien things were in the very recent past, but of a story that shouldn’t be repeated in the future.

It’s refreshing to hear the story of Whitney’s rise and fall from a different perspective other than that of her family. Precisely what more, and how more, and when more, has been the subject of speculation since the beginning of Houston's career. They should live the rest of lives in shame because Whitney and Bobbi Kristina’s blood is on their hands. Regarding Whitney's tumultuous childhood and as a singer, this book reinforced things I already had heard or suspected of Cissy, John and the rest of the Houston family. I always brought my Whitney cassette tape with me while I patiently waited my turn to be able to listen to it.There is also a clear attempt to show the kind, vulnerable side of Whitney and say goodbye to her beloved friend.

If "they" had let Whitney be open about her relationship with Robyn, then maybe a huge message would have got through and gone some way to stamping out homophobia. Bobby knew that Whitney loved him, but he also knew she wasn't in love with him and only married him to shrug off the gay rumours. Tror inte heller att Robyn berättar allt, men hela poängen är väl att Whitney aldrig fick ha något privatliv eller sätta egna gränser. For Houston, that meant coming of age in the church, as the daughter of pop gospel great Cissy Houston. One of the biggest misconceptions that I had about Whitney Houston was that it was Bobby Brown who introduced her to drugs, which is not true.Houston opened up the world for Crawford, exposing her to all the glamour, travel and interest that kind of fame can deliver. There was Houston's 1983 Merv Griffin Show appearance, where her mother thought the band needed to pick it up and so started conducting them herself. It was unclear why more wasn't done to protect Houston's assets and best interests financially and otherwise. Chiiiiilllleeeeee, the TEA was served piping hot and the most disturbing thing I took from the book was Whitney’s family. I felt compelled to stand up at that point, not only to lift her legacy, but to honour our friendship, because friends aren’t something that you should just toss away.
