Description

In my review of the last installment I noted Haro Aso’s story and artwork form the equivalent of the greatest Western graphic novels you’ve ever read. You can’t give enough credit to Keiko Ogata for her casting the series–every actor she selected looks identical to Aso’s original ideas in the book. Will Chota, Karube, and Ryouhei be able to survive this dangerous new world, and is there a way they can get back to their original lives?

Arisu’s strength in the TV show was from his skills as a gamer, and although he has that background in the original story, Aso makes clear he has above-average attention to details, something like Shawn Spencer in the TV series Psych. As with prior volumes, the book is printed entirely in its original black and white artwork, typical of manga books, and it retains the creator’s original manga formatting. Ryohei Arisu is a young man who struggles to connect with his family and spends time hanging out with his friends, Daikichi Karube and Chōta Segawa.

The third and last OVA episode was bundled with the limited edition of the 14th volume of the manga on February 18, 2015. Fingers crossed that both these series receive English serialization in 2023 after the live-action Netflix series teased a potential third season. The most laid-back and humane of the gamemasters, he is the only gamemaster who Arisu deeply respects.

The Queen of Hearts is revealed, although her identity is not really a surprise (that would have happened had one of the “friends” of Arisu turned out to be a Queen). He’s such a great character, and gives readers enough to want to grab volume 2 and come back for more. Unlike the drama of the streaming series, it’s played in the book as one of the future breaks of tension for laughs. For those new to manga you read from the last page to the first page, top to bottom but from right to left instead of left to right. In an unusual situation in which she senses someone’s artifice, one by one incidents begin to occur…Can Alice face the cruel world and make it to Tokyo alive? One of the things Aso does well is reminding the reader to enjoy life in the midst of hardship–the reader is left with the characters able to celebrate their victory for a few days before the next trial arrives. Arisu hopes they are close to going home, but the games the Face Cards play might be worse than any of the cruelties the Dealers came up with. Several games later however, the Mad Hatter is killed and the Beach is turned into the game stage for the Ten of Hearts, the final game of the first stage. High schooler Ryohei Arisu fights a constant struggle against crushing anxiety over his grades, social standing, and potential for future success. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.
