I’ve wanted to read a Claire McGowan book for a while now and appreciated the introduction to her writing.

The two of them report what they have seen to the police but nothing much comes of it, so they decide to continue their own investigation.

Neither are sleeping and when they run into each other in a park in the middle of the night, they both think they see a local girl who has been missing, in the abandon house nearby. It was a cat and mouse driven piece as 2 women are both witness to a crime but are unsure if they can trust themselves.

After a degree in English and French from Oxford University she moved to London and worked in the charity sector. Just when we think we have it figured out, there are more twists and turns, and the drama surrounding them all intensifies. The final resolution to Sam’s disappearance and several other unsolved crimes is almost like pulling a rabbit out of a hat – fine for a magic show but not a very satisfactory ending for a mystery novel. Tim is a journalist suffering from guilt and horrific memories of an accident - leaving him unable to sleep, suffering from insomnia. Like sleuths, they follow the clues, try to involve the police, but with no results, and eventually are in danger for their lives.

Her narrative at the start was a bit much and seemed more like a chaotic day in the life of rather than the mystery of Samantha Ellis. Coincidentally, there is a missing 19-year old woman from their town, and they can’t help but wonder if that’s who they saw in the window of the house. The children unfortunately share a room in their pokey little two bed flat on the outskirts of London, meaning when one wakes then the other does also. The police aren’t making time for Mary and Tim, so they decide to take matters into their own hands and try to solve a crime. One night when she can barely get some shut eye looks out the window and seemingly sees something at the same time her neighbor who suffers from PTSD does the same and witnesses the same event. A lot of the story was more plot driven than character dynamic and character development but I think this made it a good book. As the pair are drawn into a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse, the culprit appears to be even closer to home than they thought.
