Wrightson and Wray’s artistic efforts are stunning to behold, though, and I can see myself revisiting the story for purely aesthetic reasons. Break the Badass: A wounded Bruce is captured by the titular cult led by Deacon Blackfire, who drugged and brainwashed Bruce into joining their group and it's implied that many of the other members were the same way, given they scattered once a freed and recovered Bruce and Jason defeat Blackfire and don't remember what they did.

The artwork by Bernie Wrightson also makes Gotham feel like an unforgiving hell-hole that is constantly edging closer towards destruction. For example, why wouldn’t Deacon Blackfire unmask Batman while the Caped Crusader is in his custody? The story concerns the takeover of Gotham City by a possibly supernatural, messianic leader, Deacon Blackfire who gathers his followers from the dispossessed, homeless and criminal elements of the city. I read this book over a year ago and I remember not liking it the first time I read it and I'm not really sure what I didn't like about it. He is in the clutches of Deacon Blackfire, a charismatic religious leader who has assembled an army from the homeless of Gotham.

Villainous Breakdown: After the above No-Holds-Barred Beatdown, a battered Blackfire pitifully pleads for Batman to stop beating him. Jim Starlin is responsible for many of the greatest Batman stories ever told, as well as Cosmic Odyssey and Death of the New Gods!
