They transform the challenging nature of Bear Island into their own playground, finding ice-cold waves and precipitous slopes.

At the burial of his father, Smithy and Lechinski, Lansing achieves some form of closure and embraces Lindquist. That the actual explanation and bad guys were such a cliché by that stage did little to endear the film to viewers in 1979, but now they come across as staples of the sort of thriller that you can waste time with on the small screen, only with perhaps more novelty thanks to it being a more relatively modern project, and in colour to boot. Bear Island is a 1979 Anglo-Canadian thriller film loosely based on the 1971 novel Bear Island by Alistair MacLean.Espionagethriller from 1979 that takes place on a norwegian island near Spitzbergen but was filmed mainly in Canada and Alaska. The true adventures of the world's greatest stuntman : my life as Indiana Jones, James Bond, Superman and other movie heroes. Snell and Selkirk were so positive about Bear Island's prospects that at one stage they planned a series of Alistair MacLean adaptations for annual Christmas release, starting with The Way to Dusty Death. American scientist Frank Lansing (Donald Sutherland) has come because his father was a U-boat commander who died there, and as accidents start to decimate the expedition he begins to realise that some of his colleagues are after a shipment of gold aboard the U-boat that his father commanded.

This strikes me as one of those films that I rarely seem to find anything positive written about and to be honest, I can’t figure out why. I think if we cut some of the character interaction and just played it for speed and thrills it might have made more money. Donald Sutherland attempts a flawed hero, but he doesn’t have much to work with, which includes a particularly vapid Redgrave.
