Description

It provides a rich resource based in the Celtic tradition and the liturgical structure of pausing from the busyness of everyday life to spend time with God. but for now I am content to keep the Hours, celebrate the Saints and their days, and enjoy the fellowship of like travelers who came for a momentary 'Poustinia' or Retreat. Building on the foundations set down in the first volume, this new collection blends the voices of the early Celtic and desert saints with more contemporary sources in ways that continue to speak to us in our own generation and culture. At the heart of the life of the Northumbria Community, as well as this book, lies the Daily Office -- morning, noon, and evening prayers and a monthly cycle of meditations for individual or communal use each day.

For those unaccustomed to recited prayers, it will be new and invigorating, even if the strangeness of it may take some getting used to. Following the success of his multi-award winning documentary film, My Journey to Life, Rainer tells the stories of four major Celtic saints narrated by Roy Searle of the Northumbria Community. Alexander Carmichael complied the collection in the second half of the nineteenth century, and in doing so created a lasting record of a culture and way of life that has now largely disappeared.I love the rhythm of this liturgy, the way the prayers work deep into your heart and mind (as you use them more and more), going with you throughout your day, and bringing you back again. If you are interested in using part of our liturgy on a regular basis in public worship, we produce a range of extracts from Celtic Daily Prayer printed on high quality trifold A4 cards and A5 booklets for the purpose and ask that you purchase supplies of these rather than producing your own as these liturgies are copyright to Northumbria Community, and we derive a significant part of our income from the sale of resources. At Nether Springs, the mother house of the Community, the Office is said or sung at set times in the chapel; when Companions in the Community meet together, saying the Office can be a routine part of the meeting; and individuals and families can use it in their homes as part of daily life. Then there are precious graces for for the celebrations of birth, rebirth, marriage, growing older, and bereavement.

The great heritage of Western civilisation – from the Greek and Roman classics to Jewish Christian works – would have been utterly lost were it not for the holy men and women of the unconquered Ireland. It is also rooted in poets, prophets and the theology and devotional writing of the black theologian and mentor to Martin Luther King Jr. Here, far from the barbarian despoliation of the continent, monks and scribes labouriously, lovingly, even playfully preserved the West's written treasury. This allows him to range more widely, including some interesting comments on Aramaic concerning the beatitudes and some new beatitudes from the poet, Scott Cairns, and Pope Francis. The Northumbria Community is a diverse, worldwide, Christian Community, committed to a new way for living. These liturgies reflect the importance to us of the inspiration and example of the Celtic, and in particular the Northumbrian, saints.
