She’s reluctant to consider he might have changed and that says more about Beth than it does her husband. This book will transform how you see our biggest environmental problems -- and how we can solve them. This is a big, sweeping book about the economic, geopolitical, and technological history and future of the world.

I was desperate to find out why things were the way they were and what would happen to all the characters.S. to keep the sea lanes open, simply because of the catastrophic consequences to China of not doing so (which Zeihan vividly describes). Pandemics and war, social turmoil and corrupt governments, natural disasters and environmental collapse--it's hard not to watch the signs of the times and feel afraid. The first of these is probably unavoidable, and Zeihan is on by far the most solid ground when he describes the changes that will result from having aging, shrinking populations in every region of the world. Of course, there are plenty more great apocalypse and post-apocalypse novels that didn’t fit on this list, and I haven’t read enough books in translation in this genre, so as ever, please add on your own favorites in the comments. An encyclopedia of memory–from A to Z– The End of the World Book was a finalist for both the PEN USA Fiction Award 2009 and the Publishing Triangle Edmund White Debut Fiction Award 2009, and was in Seattle Times Best Ten Books of 2008.

Instead, it feels like an important message wrapped inside entertaining, thought-provoking nightmare upon nightmare with a scarred-for-life-flavored cherry on top. In The End of the World Book, all of the individual fragments add up to an understanding of its creator, revealing everything and nothing about him.And how did they become central to the region’s nationalist and developmental projects in the first place? We are bombarded by doomsday headlines that tell us the soil won't be able to support crops, fish will vanish from our oceans, that we should reconsider having children. There are interesting characters and subplots, but none are allowed to develop over and above the narrator’s presence. A philosopher, historian of religions, and anthropologist, Ernesto de Martino (1908–1965) produced a body of work that prefigured many ideas and concerns that would later come to animate anthropology.
