So the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge gave accurate insights, or perhaps it enhanced their appreciation of sensuality. She eats and shares the fruits of the Tree of Life or the Tree of Knowledge, fruits which are “pleasing to the eye and pleasing to contemplate.

It isn't about the drugs, it's about our society, humanity, our history and most importantly, our mindset. That gets more interesting with bigger mammals and very exciting with primates, because a few hundred or thousands of years of consuming, especially during pregnancy, might have some impact. This seems to suggest that Greek wines were more akin to extracts and tinctures of other plant essences than they were to wine as we know it today.

There were a few parts I did like, including a wealth of historical information about the use of psychedelics in various cultures throughout history, and some interesting theories about their role in the development of both ancient and modern religions. What could genetic engineering make possible, like combining the positive or mind-altering aspects in one single plant? An eloquent proposal for recovering something vital--a sense of the sacred, the transcendent, the Absolute--before it's too late. The book covers a very wide range of topics, from the description of legal and illegal synthesized drugs, natural drugs, history of drug use, and it´s influence on human evolution and history. McKenna provides a revisionist look at the historical role of drugs in the East and the West, from ancient spice, sugar, and rum trades to marijuana, cocaine, synthetics, and even television-illustrating the human desire for the "food of the gods" and the powerful potential to replace abuse of illegal drugs with a shamanic understanding, insistence on community, reverence for nature, and increased self-awareness.

Although I personally don't believe McKenna provides all the right answers he does get us asking the right questions. The only religions that are more than the traditionally sanctioned moral codes are trance, dance ecstasy, and intoxication by hallucinogens. Deep-seated cultural biases explain why the Western mind turns suddenly anxious and repressive on contemplating drugs.
