This book introduces a couple Chinese New Year traditions while the kids trying to catch a dragon while getting ready for the holiday. A kid tries to catch a good-luck dragon hiding around town as the family prepares for Chinese New Year following the formula established in How To Catch an Elf (2016) and other series installments. I only know for sure because I asked someone but a simple heading or footnote stating that it is a 'Mandarin translation' would have been helpful. My little boy is only 4 and doesn't know how to speak English, no matter, he really likes the drawings and history, that i have translated!

Books bring out the best imaginations in children and this one does that, with lots of great fun characters to meet along the way of a fun adventure! A cool added tidbit is in the back of the book, all of the text is translated side by side in Chinese. Ultimately, despite the protagonist’s failure to catch the dragon, it is being within the embrace of a loving family (depicted as a mother and a grandmother) that is the luckiest of all. There are also symbols on the banners throughout the story and if you don't know any Mandarin at all, you don't get to know what it says, which is a little disappointing for someone like me who is fascinated by languages. This would be a very nice addition to any storytime selection of books, and most definitely to a library's collection. He spends his non-writing time thinking about writing and going to as many live music shows as he can. I keep hoping that the issues with the meter will be cleared up in these books, but each one I read seems to be exactly the same.

I really enjoyed the educational aspect of the Chinese customs and the highlighted words in English and the corresponding Chinese characters on select items throughout the story. Though he’s afraid, he stands tall and is brave (not just once, either—the escape hatch beckons, but NASA’s saying gets him through: “FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION”). With adventure around every corner, and core values of friendship, kindness and imaginative play, the Albie stories make great bedtime stories and support early years education too! With very mild peril that is quickly resolved, and friendly mythical creatures, this book is great fun! I love writing stories that make children laugh and get excited about reading and drawing and writing.

This one definitely stands out for focusing on the dragon and the multicultural group of kids celebrating (makes me wonder if it is supposed to be in Hong Kong or Singapore).

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. It has been written to meet the Year 4 expected standard and comes with a handy annotated version detailing the text-type specific features (red), grammar (green), punctuation (purple) and spelling (blue) teaching opportunities should you wish to use this text with your learners. How to Catch a Dragon is everything you love about the How to Catch series, now appealing to a wider audience!
