Description

Introduction by Chris Killip, essay by John Berger and Sylvia Grant; edited by Mark Holborn; design by Peter Dyer. Rather than trying to pin all the blame on Mrs Thatcher, I was trying to pin the blame on all politicians, if that was what I was trying to do. To the people in these photographs I am superfluous, my life does not depend upon their struggle, only my hopes.

But the images show] this is what it was like, these ships were made here, this is how they made them – this place has a history, a big history. The objective history of England doesn’t amount to much if you don’t believe in it, and I don’t, and I don’t believe that anyone in these photographs does either as they face the reality of de-industrialisation in a system which regards their lives as disposable. Going back to his archive to prepare, he found prints he hadn’t looked at in 30 years, he explains – even images he’d never printed. Good+; Softcover; Covers are clean and glossy with just a few light scratches and a pattern of sun-fading to the back cover; Clean textblock edges; Very small (1/2") stain to the lower right page-edge of the last 5 pages, otherwise the endpapers and all text pages are clean and unmarked; Good binding; This book will be shipped in a sturdy cardboard box with foam padding; Large Format (11. The essay which follows the photographs is the result of a unique and remarkable collaboration between John Berger and Sylvia Grant.

In the short film, Skinningrove, 2013, Chris Killip tells personal stories about the people in his photographs. Erschien ein Jahr nach und in einer sehr viel kleineren Auflage (von nur 1000 Exemplaren) als die englische Original-Ausgabe (Martin Secker und Warburg, London, 1988). Helen and Her Hula-hoop, Seacoal Camp, Lynemouth, Northumberland, 1984, Chris Killip, gelatin silver print. The fifty photographs of In Flagrante serve as the foundation of this exhibition, which includes maquettes, contact sheets, and work prints to reveal the artist’s process. Published one year after and in a much more smaller run (of only 1000 copies) than the original english edition (Martin Secker and Warburg, London, 1988).Poetic, penetrating, and often heartbreaking, Chris Killip's In Flagrante remains the most important photobook to document the devastating impact of deindustrialization on working-class communities in northern England in the 1970s and 1980s.
