Libertalia — I see the Automa book shows 39 Solo cards… I see there’s 1-40 printed on the cards just like all other cards. If you and another player choose the same cards, the player with the higher reputation is considered the higher rank.

The catch is, that his anchor ability only goes off if he is on your ship during the anchoring phase, and the Gunner was a part of everyone’s hand, which discards a rival character from an opposing ship. I learned from Azul that pulling chunking, colorful bakelite tokens out of the bag is a delightful experience, so that’s exactly the material and size we used for loot tokens in Libertalia: Winds of Galecrest. These double-sided tiles allow players to change the set-up in an infinite number of configurations! That variety is super evident in the shear number of character cards – each with its unique abilities. This is a key element of the game since breaking ties in your favor can be the difference between a chest of gold and a cursed relic. There’s a big bag of chunky plastic loot tiles to draw from, similar to those in Azul, which slide and clack in a most satisfying manner as you rummage around amongst them. After that’s resolved, you go back along the cards in the opposite direction for the dusk phase, activating any cards with the dusk logo, and choosing tiles from the booty pile.

I’ve not even touched on the ‘stormy’ side of the board, or the different loot tiles which keep the game fresh, and even more fiercely competitive. Then comes the Gameplay Review, in which the setup and gameplay are discussed in detail, along with initial thoughts. With the added spice of varying degrees of take that everyone at the table is invested with a good level of player interaction. Even without an original game to compare it to, Libertalia: Winds of Galecrest is an exceptional production. It’s a simple elegant system that not only solves potential hiccups but serves as a solid way to reinforce the game’s strategic potential. It will be published in a number of languages from the following partners: Grok, Feuerland, Matagot, Phalanx, Ghenos, DeltaVision, Maldito, ALBI, 999 Games, and Surfin’ Meeple.

They also stash treasure away for safety in their treasure chest scorer and discards characters, coins and loot tokens from their ship. However, there is a second automa thrown in that doesn’t do anything except play a card purely for its rank to keep you from gaming the real automa. Norway isn’t a member of the EU while Denmark is, so maybe the setup that Spiral Galaxy created for the EU after Brexit doesn’t cover Norway.
