Description

Each reading practice session has a clear focus, so that the demands of the session do not overload the children’s working memory. At Wooburn Green Primary School we teach phonics through the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds revised, which is a systematic and synthetic phonics programme. Little Wandle Letters and Sounds 7+ offers 50 books designed for children in KS2 who need more practice to consolidate their phonic knowledge. This is a much faster paced and age appropriate version of the Little Wandle scheme which enables children to access age appropriate reading and therefore the full curriculum much more rapidly, and also prepares them for the KS3 curriculum when they move onto secondary school. I too don’t really like the uncertainty of this being a new scheme not directly comparable with the old book bands as it’s harder to choose what books to read together at home of a similar level.

This progression is based on the DfE’s publication ‘Letters and Sounds: Improving Rates of Progress 2021’. Weekly content grids, lesson templates and ‘How to’ videos all help to ensure that all adults maintain consistency in their teaching and this is monitored half termly by the Reading Leader and SLT so that any misconceptions or inconsistencies can be rectified as soon as possible. Introduction and engagement - The teacher will explain to the children what they will be learning today and get them enthusiastic and motivated for the session. Children in Year 1 review Phases 3 and 4 and are taught to read and spell words using Phase 5 GPCs with fluency and accuracy.

Pupils are able to engage in discussions about plots and characters, recommend a book to a peer and evaluate an author's use of language and the impact this has on the reader. The Reading Leader and SLT use the Audit and Prompt cards to regularly monitor and observe teaching; they use the summative data to identify children who need additional support and gaps in learning.

Teachers will use the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised assessments and matching grids to ensure that children are given a book that is fully decodable in line with their secure phonic knowledge. Children with special educational needs follow the Little Wandle Phonics programme as outlined above. If one of them is stuck for an idea, the other usually comes up with something or makes a cup of tea. with any child new to the school in Reception and Year 1 to quickly identify any gaps in their phonic knowledge and plan and provide appropriate extra teaching.Big Cat Phonics for Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised has been developed in collaboration with Wandle Learning Trust and Little Sutton Primary School.

For Year 1 children, this is when they read the final fluency assessment at 60–70+ words per minute. It comprises of classroom resources to support the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised SSP and a range of phonic readers that together provide a consistent and highly effective approach to teaching phonics.

They will practice decoding the words in the book and will discuss the meaning of any new words before reading. Big Cat Little wandle books are linked directly to the phonics progression of sounds and tricky words taught. He's pretty fluent now in the phase 5 so just waiting to see whether these 7+ books are offered next or something else more challenging. From September 2023, Little Wandle introduced a Phonics and spelling programme Year 2 consisting of daily lessons. Reading Books for Little Wandle Discover an exciting mix of stories and non-fiction that are matched perfectly to the Little Wandle progression and support all the Letters and Sounds phases. All children have daily opportunities to read a variety of material in school, including regularly with an adult. In the meantime, reading a variety of other books is widening his exposure to new words so that can only be a good thing I guess! Each class in KS2 has a class reading book which allows teachers share their own love of reading with their pupils. It maps the Little Wandle books to the old reading bands which gave me some assurance all is going ok. Children need to practice and secure their phonic decoding skills until they become automatic and fluent readers.
