Description

I guess I expected it to have more of a strong rum flavour but as others have said it almost tastes like a whiskey (to an untrained palette at least) but I guess that is darker rums. Crafted from a blend of intense and aromatic rums, distilled in traditional copper pot and column stills, matured between 3 to 7 years in American whiskey casks, and finished for 6 months in deeply charred Bourbon casks. Molasses based, blend of column and pot still distillates with more pot still component than its predecessor and aged for a bit longer – the rum’s age ranging from 3 to 7 years old in the tropics in ex-American Whiskey casks.

At first taste, it was similar to the standard Mount Gay but then it transferred to the back of my throat and had more of a kick. I’m interested as how the ex-American casks would differ from ex-Bourbon ones – if anyone has details regarding this please get in touch. Please always read the labels, warnings, and directions provided with the product before using or consuming a product. Mount Gay Black Barrel (MGBB) hit the UK market in 2014, meant to bridge the gap between Mount Gay Eclipse and the XO. I don't have much to compare it to which is why I have not given it 5 stars but it was quite pleasant to drink but more noticeable was the pleasant lingering after taste. MGDCB definitely wins this from the complexity point of view, but I know I will definitely be nostalgic about the MGBB’s flavour profile especially paired with the amazing value for money. Mount Gay Black Barrel Cask Strength is molasses based, pot and column distilled and aged for an unspecified amount of time in ex-American Whisky barrels before being finished in heavily charred ex-Bourbon barrels.Mount Gay Black Barrel is double pot distilled and maturated for a second time in bourbon oak barrels.

Black Barrel Cask Strength is a rum best enjoyed over ice allowing the flavours to diffuse and mature over time. Same with the original Black Barrel, it has been aged in former American Whisky casks before being finished in very charred ex-Bourbon barrels – hence the name. Rich warming notes of plum on the nose, as wells as sultanas, cracked black pepper and creamy vanilla from the bourbon barrel finish.Mount Gay Black Barrel Cask Strength is bottled at 66% ABV and available only in Barbados at the Distillery and Visitor Centre in limited quantities. It's been painful to watch the likes of gin and vodka being raved about so much, whisky is always at the top of the tree and yet rum seems to be the poor relation within the spirit family. Definitely now one of my favourite rums, it’s not too sweet, being nicely balanced and smooth drinking. While Black Barrel is crafted in the Signature Mount Gay style of blending copper column and double copper pot still distillates both aged in toasted oak barrels, Black Barrel boasts a second maturation in charred Bourbon casks, to deliver aromas of bold spice, toasted wood, oaky vanilla, caramel and candied fruits. From mid palate towards the end it becomes more spicy and woody with bold black pepper notes, some ground coffee and a touch of smoke – I’d say this is a layer added by the charred barrel. I really enjoy the standard Mount Gay Black Barrel so when I heard there were releasing version at cask strength I knew I had to try it.When drinking straight, the flavor was quite smooth and somewhat sweet with a smokiness that reminded me of the whiskeys I generally drink and I enjoyed it, but there is a LOT of burn after that I wasn't expecting. Only the finest sugar cane molasses and pure water that's filtered through the coral heart of the island of Barbados are selected.
