Description

This is an excellent book that follows a child's journey of coming to accept the separation of his parents. Mum and Dad Glue is very much a message book, and is aimed squarely at young children in the exact same situation as the unnamed hero. The image of the crack is a sharp tool in showcasing how severe children's guilt towards divorce can be and how massive this change is to their lives. Beautifully rhyming story that flows and in with really lovely language tackles the issue of parent separation.

Divorce is an unhappy fact that affects many children's lives; parents who are divorcing will value this story that can be read to their children, its message one of comfort to help soothe and make them aware that their parents' separation is in no way their fault. The moral of this story is that it is not anyones fault his parents have fallen out of love with each other, and it doesn't mean they have fallen any less out of love with him. It softly and gently addresses what can be such a difficult subject with lighthearted illustrations and rhyming poetry. It would be a great recommendation to send home, or to read in a smaller, comfortable group, so that children feel they can ask questions, share their response and feelings and talk through these in a trusting environment. I really enjoyed this book as it follows the tale of a little boy who’s parents have/ are in the process of getting a divorce. The illustration powerfully pairs with the text, as everything from buildings, lamp-posts and lunch boxes are broken in two.

This message is conveyed in a meaningful way whilst being light hearted in the storyline approaching a difficult topic in a sensitive way. A powerful poem which follows a boy who’s parents are getting divorced and feels like he is to blame and struggling to come to terms with it. This story is told in such a kind and soft way that this may allow children to feel comfortable to talk about the subject. This video link is provided to help an adult assess the book's suitability for a child's situation before purchasing it. Beautiful book from a child’s perspective of handling divorce- really makes you think about how a child may see a divorce of parents.By creating this sense of emotion the book is ideal to create and sustain a dialogue with the child and also provides the child with the feelings that this is okay, and it is okay to question the events that are happening around them.

The book follows the story in a sensitive and soft tone, and would be a perfect read with a child who is experiencing this in their life.Essentially, the little boy, who is trying to use an inanimate tool, to fix a very real, tangible problem, comes to find that some things in life you cannot fix.

I think this book can help bring comfort to children going through this and lets students who haven't gone through this to sympathize with their classmates more. This changes the boy’s attitude towards what is happening to his family and he begins to embrace events more positively. The author conveys a difficult topic in a sensitive manner whilst offering a sense of warmth and understanding at the end. His method for this isn't the usual response though: he looks for glue to stick his mum and dad together.
