But whether it's wisdom or self-belief thee rest of "Moseley Shoals" isn't to be found wanting because while eight of the remaining nine tracks may not be as familiar they do pass the fab-or-filler test even if [spoiler alert] they don't all perhaps adhere to a strict Britpop template.

Moseley’ takes its name from an area in Birmingham, ‘ Moseley Shoals’ is a tribute to Muscle Shoals, the legendary soul recording studios in Alabama. So while that's three out of three so far you have to question the wisdom, or perhaps the self-belief, of any band that front-loads its second album with three hits. I've come late to the Ocean Colour Scene party but after seeing them headline Weyfest this summer I'm now a committed convert. However "It's My Shadow" that follows is perhaps, for me at least, the lowest point of the album, it's not that there's anything actually wrong with this nice reflective slice of Britpop but in the company of the other great songs here nice and reflective is all it is.In 2009, the band went into the studio with producer Gavin Monaghan, known for his work with Editors, Scott Matthews and The Twang, to work on a new album, Saturday, with a release date of 1 February 2010 to mark the 21st anniversary of the band. Having not previously been familiar with OCS, somehow they and much of the late '90s and early noughties passed me by, ahead of the fest' I broke one of my cardinal rules and bought their best of package "Songs For The Front Row" as a crammer, but now I'm back for more and have purchased not just their breakthrough album "Moseley Shoals" but also its successor "Marchin Already".

Moseley' takes its name from an area in Birmingham, 'Moseley Shoals' is a tribute to Muscle Shoals, the legendary soul recording studios in Alabama. Fleeting Mind" that follows is another that has a sixties British folk-pop sound but with sharp jagged guitar work from Steve Craddock whose playing throughout the album is just phenomenal. A low-key start to their career was boosted by two things – the endorsement of two of Britain's biggest pop stars – Paul Weller and Noel Gallagher, and the exposure given to the first single, The Riverboat Song, by Chris Evans on his hit TV show 'TFI Friday'. In May, a follow-up vinyl set was released, covering the three studio albums released between 1999-2003. A vinyl reissue of the second full length album from Ocean Colour Scene, originally released in 1996.

But while there are similarities there is a complexity to OCS's sound that's all their own, and it's at this point that I realise that that's where the strengths of this album lie. The album had a working title of 'Rockfield', named after the studios where it was recorded, but it was released as Saturday - both "Rockfield" and "Saturday" being tracks thereon. Indeed some of these songs - I'm thinking of One For The Road, Policemen and Pirates, The Downstream - would have fitted very nicely onto Beggar's Banquet or Let It Bleed (yes, I'm old enough to remember those albums the first time round). When the Birmingham quartet recorded Moseley Shoals in their tiny home studio, there wasn't a label that wanted them.

cette magnifique voix de Simon Fowler et les guitares de Steve Cradock on ne s'en lasse pas, un album qui s'écoute du début a la fin sans problème. This support slot brought OCS to the attention of more record labels, and eventually in late 1995, the band signed with MCA Records. In 2023 the band released a career-spanning box set entitled Yesterday, Today 1992–2018, which contained all their studio albums and 5 bonus CDs, totalling 230 tracks.A low-key start to their career was boosted by two things – the endorsement of two of Britain’s biggest pop stars – Paul Weller and Noel Gallagher, and the exposure given to the first single, “The Riverboat Song”, by Chris Evans on his hit TV show TFI Friday.
