The emotions I experienced then–an irrational hatred for the unseen forces that drove us into those circumstances, a poisonous hostility towards adults, and a gentle sentimentality for my friends–were a starting point for everything since. When Battle Royale was released, the idea of teenagers having to kill each other until one of them is the only survivor caused controversy to the surprise of no one, primarily because I don’t think any other director has tackled a theme or concept like this before in a theatrical film format that would be seen by many people globally. Interestingly there’s a manga adaptation of Battle Royale, also written by Koushun Takami, which is apparently pretty good according to the manga community but it’s been out of print for a very long time now.

They are: Battle Royale, The Hills Have Eyes, Sailor Suit and Machine Gun, Mill of the Stone Women, and Phantom of the Mall: Eric's Revenge. Finally, there’s a double-sided poster and a collection of Battle Royale “Trump Cards” which appears to be some sort of card game. Overseeing the carnage is Beat Takeshi Kitano (Sonatine, Hana-bi, Zatoichi) as the teacher pushed to the edge by his unruly charges.namely, young fresh-faced children hacking each other to bits:) Of course, the idea that the government has locked exploding collars around their tender necks is a horrific bonus! ULTRA-HD SPECIAL EDITION CONTENTS • 4K restoration of the Original Theatrical Version and Special Edition Director’s Cut of Battle Royale from the original camera negative by Arrow Films, approved by Kenta Fukasaku • 4K (2160p) UHD Blu-ray presentation of both versions in Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible) • Original 5. Additionally, the There’s also an abundance of poor-quality CG effects—some of which have been improved in the Revenge cut, but not enough to make a real difference. The rigid box set includes multiple digipacks that include a disc each, with two of them also including an additional physical item; a 52-page booklet in the same style as other Arrow Video first print edition releases and a fold-out poster, as well as a cardboard box that includes two sets of trump cards and a hardcover 120-page book that goes over the history of Kinji Fukasaku’s career written by Tom Mes.

Now, I’m getting further and further away from its target demographic, the story doesn’t affect me as viscerally, while the satire seems less insightful in a world where Battle Royale seems more prescient than polemic. For those of you who may already own previous editions of these films on disc, the good news is that everything from the 2012 Starz/Anchor Bay Blu-ray has carried over here, as well as all of the extras from the 2010 Arrow Video UK Blu-ray release, and the 2002 Tartan DVD too.

She ends up transferred to a school full of delinquents and is the only one unsurprised when a school coach trip ends up at military compound. Having said that, nothing in the Director's Cut detracts from the film and I felt that it was a slightly superior cut. everything we’d been taught in school, about how Japan was fighting the war to win world peace, was a pack of lies. This mix has a little bit more bluster than the original, with more aggressive use of the surround channels in combat sequences (particularly the teens’ “amphibious” lading on the island). Authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority for consumer credit activities Firm Reference Number 656489. Exclusive to this limited edition are the 23-track Battle Royale soundtrack CD; a 52-page book of essays; a 120-page monograph on director Kinji Fukasaku by Tom Mes; a set of Trump cards; and a poster. years after its initial release, it remains of the most ground-breaking pictures to ever come from Asian cinema. I was still in my twenties when I first watched Battle Royale, still of an age when its story and the social satire would be effective, and the world was a different place too, not as divisive or as reactionary.Alongside these updated versions of the movie are a whole host of fascinating extra features, including some new ones just for this set. Of films made post-2000, I think I’ve seen Battle Royale the most often, and the more you watch a movie, the less effective it becomes. This is essentially a reference-grade image, not a perfect presentation but as close to one as is possible for this film. The kids of Third Year Class-B Shiroiwa Junior High School are back, in a brand new UHD restoration of the classic cult shocker adapted from the controversial novel by Koushun Takami.

When you know a story and its characters that well, you start seeking the screen for trivialities and background curiosities. The original Battle Royale was shot on 35 mm photochemical film using Arriflex 535B cameras with Zeiss and Angenieux spherical lenses, and was finished on film at the 1. It’s a very satisfying experience when it comes to the audio and visual aspects of the presentation. Although potentially polarising for some audiences, Battle Royalemanages to strike up the right balance of heartache, humour, and bloodshed in an unforgettable experience.
